A “sneakily clever” (Kevin Kwan) novel of the lengths we’ll go for that thing called love, from the author of Like Mother, Like Mother

“In her clever modern twist on the epistolary form, Rieger excavates the humor and humanity from a most bitter uncoupling.”—Emily Giffin, The New York Times Book Review (Editors’ Choice)

“A witty first novel . . . providing all the voyeuristic pleasure of snooping through someone else’s inbox.”—People

Sophie Diehl is happily toiling away at an old-line New England law firm when Mayflower descendant Mia Meiklejohn Durkheim strides through the door. While dining at the most chic eatery in town, Mia was handed a most unwanted substitute for the wine list: divorce papers.

Sophie reluctantly steps away from her criminal law casework to conduct Mia’s intake interview and, to her dismay, Mia insists she take the case—Sophie is just who she needs to take on her soon-to-be-ex and his thuggish lawyers. For Sophie, the whole affair sparks a hard look at the relationships in her own life with parents, friends, and lovers.

A rich, layered novel told entirely through personal correspondence, office memos, e-mails, articles, handwritten notes, and legal documents, The Divorce Papers offers a direct window into the lives of an entertaining cast of characters never shy about speaking their minds.

I downloaded thinking it would be a good read while on the road. It was! I went snooping for more books by this author and wasn't disappointed😀

Told through the paper trail associated and adjacent to a divorce process, what might be assumed to be dry or too legalistic is in fact a romp through how the well-to-do can screw each other over and the satisfaction (or dissatisfaction) the law can give. A great read that makes some lawyers likeable, some pediatric oncologists detestable and some 11-year olds both negotiable and negotiator. A story even the happily married will enjoy.

As someone who's been fortunate to have never had intimate contact with divorce, this book was a real eye opener. I now feel at least somewhat familiar with process and some of the pitfalls that can arise. It was also a nice surprise how much I enjoyed the writing style. I was a bit skeptical at first but it was a great way of bringing different points of view into play about the various story lines.

I was looking for something light to read and stumbled on to a thoroughly stimulating, epistolary novel. Can't recommend it highly enough.

I thought this book was a lovely way to pass the day. I found it witty and touching. I enjoyed the various formats, and if I skipped over the legal documents, I knew the salient points would be summed up in the next email or memo. Don't let the fussy, bad reviews dissuade you; it's quite a nice book.

Not a bad read but the style in which it is written made it difficult to become engaged with the characters.

I know nothing about divorce, and thought it could be depressing - but I LOVED this book! It has plenty of humor and some sadness (kid involved), but I could not put it down. Loved reading all the documents, too. Clever and interesting!

Loved it. Fun, easy read. Interesting way to tell the story of a divorce.

As a retired NYC divorce attorney,I relived every moment of Sophie's trials and tribulations. The book was amazingly accurate, except in real life there weren't so many laughs. It just confirmed to me the wisdom of leaving the practice and retiring early. If enough lay people read it , the divorce rate in this country would be cut in half!

I wanted to like this book. Same divorce situation, in 2014 terms. Some great little nuggets, but mostly the viewpoints of the attorney's. However, the self explorations though exhausting memo's, email and legal documents (attorney 's and client's) left me glad 1. That I did not waste my time and money on this sort of thing, and 2. I have an e-reader that can fast forward to a non-ending.
