Welcome to the first volume in a new Reader’s Digest digital series, True Stories. Celebrating 90 years since the magazine’s first issue, the series will showcase our recently digitized archives.

We dug into this rich history and discovered dozens of vintage and modern classics—real-life, inspiring stories of families, soldiers, and everyday heroes, plus tales of amazing animals, gripping escapades, and gorgeous nature.

With this debut issue, True Crimes: 8 Tales of Murder & Mayhem, we are honoring that great Reader’s Digest storytelling tradition.

In this vein, next month we’re offering a collection of moving military narratives, Dramas in Uniform: Soldiers’ Stories at War and at Home

Other forthcoming volumes feature heroic pets or new-year inspiration.

This book is really fun for those who love extreme characters. The reader gets a great assortment of villains and creeps just in time for Halloween. Each story is different so it is hard to pick a favorite but the one about the serial killer nurse who goes from hospital to hospital is probably up there with my top three.
